Yoga, Trauma, Spirituality and Social Justice Summit

May 30 – June 3, 2018
Houck, Arizona

In this potent time of upheaval in our world, we feel the call to arise and serve with new and deep resolve to uplift humanity. The conflicts of our time can often upset our inner balance – a balance that might not have been entirely secure in the first place. We feel a passion not only to be a part of the conversation, but also a part of activism that transcends violence, paternalism, and nationalism. We know that our actions must be developed locally, with a global understanding. We know that if we are not a part of the upliftment of our communities, our silence is part of the problem. In this 5-day retreat, we will learn to increase our personal capacity and the capacity of the yoga community to flow into action:

·       Understand the role that yoga can play in helping members of our community to recover their heart.

·       Figure out the new questions that need to be asked to be leaders in the yoga community

·       Learn meditation skills to help heal the mind

·       Learn about the therapeutic effects of yoga in healing trauma, addiction, and illness

·       Engage daily in deep restorative yoga practices

·       Be inspired by each other’s stories

·       Engage in the arts to help find your voice

·       Remember that we don’t have to be the biggest voice to be a potent voice

The Summit is being held at the Native American Bahá'í Institute (NABI) campus in Houck, AZ. NABI is a retreat and learning center on 40 acres of Piñon/Juniper forest surrounded by the Navajo Nation. Its natural beauty has been preserved, creating a serene setting in which to reflect and study, both individually and collectively.

The heart of the summit is the morning and afternoon discussion sessions. Discussions are two hours (one hour lecture, 30 minutes breakout groups, 30 minutes large group discussion). The soul of the summit is the time spent in ceremony, prayer, meditation, learning and discovering with each other as we enjoy yoga classes, social time and meals under the big sky of the reservation.
